Children’s orthodontics focuses on monitoring and guiding the development of a child’s teeth and jaws to ensure proper alignment as they grow. At Loughborough Road we consider it vital that children under our care are continually monitored to assess the appropriate time to commence orthodontic treatment, if required. Early assessment helps identify potential issues and ensures timely intervention when necessary.
Our practice holds a contract with the NHS for a fixed number of orthodontic cases for patients under 18 years each year. Each child is individually assessed against the criteria for NHS treatment using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Any child not qualifying can still have orthodontic treatment on a private basis. Modern orthodontic care can effectively guide dental development, improving both function and appearance.
Correct alignment of teeth enhances both the look of your child’s smile and their ability to bite and chew properly.
Orthodontic treatment can help guide the proper development of the jaw, face, and lip relationships.
Straighter teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of decay and gum disease.
Well-aligned teeth make it simpler to maintain good oral hygiene and reduce staining over time.
Children are usually assessed around the age of 7, but monitoring can start earlier during regular dental check-ups.
It is based on the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), which assesses the severity of alignment issues.
They can still receive orthodontic treatment on a private basis if needed.
Treatment time varies depending on the case, but it generally lasts from several months to a few years.
There may be mild discomfort at first, but most children adjust quickly as they get used to the braces.
